Geocaching is one of the latest and greatest forms of recreation to come out of the information technology age. Think of it as a modern day treasure hunt.
Individuals and organizations hide caches all over the world and then exchange information about the location of their caches on the Internet. GPS (Global Positioning System) users can use the location coordinates to find the caches. A cache may contain a wide variety of rewards for the finder. All the visitor needs to remember is, if they take something from the cache, they should leave something for the next visitor.
If you have never tried Geocaching we will be happy to introduce you to the sport. Our "Wine Cache" training gives you basic instruction on how to use a GPS unit and coordinates for 4 caches located close to the Lodge. If you find all 4 caches (and bring back proof) you will get a coupon for a glass of wine. It's a great way reward yourself for learning a new sport and hiking in the woods.
As of May 2008, there are 75 caches within 5 miles of the Savage River Lodge.
There are eight in the forest surrounding the Savage River Lodge. To see a map of the area geocaches visit the geocaching.com Google map
