Summer is fantastic at the Savage River Lodge! Warm days either bring out the lazy-bones or rev up the go-getters--and at the end of the day, it's hard to tell who had the best time! Plus, it's green, green, green, and the air is clean, clean, clean.

There's a lot to do at the Lodge, besides nap in your rocking chair. Here are some ideas:

Massage: By appointment only, guests may schedule a therapeutic massage in the privacy of their cabin. Cost is $90.00 per hour. Please call front desk to check availability.

Hiking: Over 13 miles of hiking trails are available. Each trail is color blazed. A trail map is located in each cabin, and additional copies are available at the front desk.

Biking: The recently completed Great Allegheny Passage bike & hike trail offers excellent bicycling and walking opportunities. The trail runs through some very scenic country between Cumberland MD and Pittsburgh PA. Guests at the Lodge can enjoy transportation to and from several points on the trail, can order picnic lunches, and even rent trail bikes and gear. For more information, visit www.greatalleghenypassage.org .

Fishing: Must have a license. Temporary three-day licenses for non-residents are $10, including trout stamp for DC and Delaware residents; $15 for Virginia residents. $31 for Pennsylvania residents and $26 for West Virginia residents. (Check with www.dnr.state.md.us for more info.) Licenses can be purchased at the Savage River Lodge and at other locations throughout Garrett and Allegany counties, and can also be purchased online from MD DNR. On-site fishing is available in the headwaters of the Savage River; ask the front desk for directions to the Savage River Reservoir, a short drive away. For guided fishing tours, we supply the best in the business when it comes to wade trips. If you are a novice fisherman or fisherwoman, why not try one of our Fly Fishing Classes, offered spring and summer. Call for more information.

Star Gazing: The lower parking lot is a great place to see the stars.

You can also enjoy other warm-weather activities such as golf, kayaking (High Mountain Sports), white water rafting (Precision Rafting) and myriad other activities (www.garrettchamber.com).

Autumn

Some things to do: fall colors, walking in the woods among falling leaves or snowflakes, reading by the fireplace, hunting for deer, grouse and turkey in the state forest lands,. playing in the snow, cross country skiing.

Many people say that autumn in Garrett County, Maryland rivals that of New England in beauty. Find out for yourself! Plan a trip to the Savage River Lodge! Colors start changing in mid-September and peak in early to mid-October. We book early (actually some fall weekends are already booked), so make your reservations now!

Winter

When: usually mid-November through mid-March
Average temperatures: High 39, Low 23
Snowy, cold, sometimes icy
Boots and Parkas recommended
Our 1.5 mile gravel road is often accessible only by 4 wheel drive in winter

Surrounded by more than 800 acres of mountain forests, the Savage River Lodge offers unparalleled outdoor fun! Explore evergreen forests and across mountain meadows. Follow mysterious animal tracks. Pick the ideal fishing spot for your spring visit. Bundle up and bird-watch from your rocking chair. Take a peaceful, quiet walk in the woods.

Since we're in the mountains, in what some fondly call the "Icebox of Maryland", chances are you'll find some snow. You can build snowmen and sled with your kids (or by yourself, for a change). Throw snowballs for your pet or for Bodhi the Lodge Dog. Go cross-country skiing or take a quiet morning snowshoe trek on our trails.

Spring

When: Usually mid-March through early June
Average temperatures: High 65, Low 44
Crisp spring days, chilly nights
Sweaters by day, jackets at night
Some things to do: Wildflowers and wildlife, hiking, fly fishing, spring turkey hunting,
mountain biking, lawn games at the Lodge or golf, fishing, kayaking at nearby
recreation areas in Garrett County or Allegany County.

Spring comes slowly to the Savage River Lodge. Once it gets here, though, it offers remarkable memories. Ferns unfold quietly to carpet the forest floor. Fawns frolic in the meadow. Birds return in droves to add their song to the season. And, our friends the black bears bring their new cubs forth from their dens.

For many of our guests, spring means one thing: fly fishing. The cold mountain waters are brimming with trout and insects. Light vegetation makes for good casting. And with a native trout population in Mud Lick Run, you can simply walk a short way from your cabin for great fishing!

Wildflowers often don't start appearing in the forest until May, and spring wildflowers generally remain until mid-June, due to our elevation.
