With quiet forests and clear mountain streams, Western Maryland is the place to be for fly fishing. If you want to go for trophys or just want to experience the meditative "zen" of fly fishing, we'll get you hooked.
As the only lodge in Maryland endorsed by Trout Unlimited, SRL is right in the middle of four trophy rivers, and we will fish whichever one is running the best when you visit. Better still, we only offer private and semi-private outings, regardless of your skill level. You'll be amazed at what you'll learn and the relationship you'll develop with the river.

Bike the Great Allegheny Passage
The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile hiking & biking trail between Cumberland, MD and Pittsburgh, PA. Built mainly on abandoned railroad beds, the trail surface is smooth, packed crushed limestone and the grade rarely exceeds 1.75% westbound and .8% eastbound. Trip highlights include crossing the Eastern Continental Divide through the Big Savage Tunnel, the soaring Salisbury Viaduct, and many miles hugging the Youghiogheny River including Ohiopyle Falls.
As our guest, we will shuttle you and your bikes from points along the trail between Ohiopyle, PA and Paw Paw, WV including Confluence, Rockwood, Deal, Meyersdale, Frostburg, and Cumberland. Once you arrive, check into your cabin, freshen up and head to the main Lodge for a cocktail prior to dinner.
On a through-ride of the GAP? Consider building in a rest day and treat yourself to an in-cabin or in-yurt massage to sooth your sore muscles.
Half the GAP Expedition (Mar - Nov) $280 for two people, $125 for each additional person Cover 75 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail over two days, between Ohiopyle, PA and Cumberland, MD. The Lodge is situated on 43 acres of private property, nestled in the middle of the Mt. Aetna Tract of the Savage River State Forest. Through a cooperative agreement with the State of Maryland, the Lodge maintains 14 miles of trails throughout their property and the Savage River State Forest. The diverse loop trails offer hours of enjoyment and opportunities to enjoy nature at its finest.
Western Maryland has a wealth of trail systems available for hiking. At the other end of Garrett County, Garrett State Forest has a 7-mile trail system that connects into Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor State Parks. You can see a comprehensive list at the Garrett Trails website.
The Savage River Lodge's location is unique for outdoor enthusiasts, as we are within driving distance to the highest points in Maryland (Backbone Mountain), West Virginia (Spruce Knob) and Pennsylvania (Mount Davis). Our guest services representatives would be happy to recommend their favorite hikes to you, here or elsewhere!
Geocaching is one of the latest and greatest forms of recreation to come out of the information technology age. It's like a modern day treasure hunt!
Individuals and organizations hide caches all over the world and use GPS coordinates to find them, then exchange information about the locations online. A cache may contain a wide variety of rewards for the finder. All the visitor needs to remember is if they take something from the cache, they should leave something for the next visitor.
If you haven't tried Geocaching we will be happy to introduce you. Our "Wine Cache" training gives you basic instruction on how to use a GPS unit and coordinates for 4 caches located close to the Lodge. If you find all 4 caches (and bring back proof) you will get a coupon for a glass of wine. It's a great way to reward yourself for learning a new sport and hiking in the woods.
Wine Cache - $35 for rental and training of two GPS units
There are nearly 100 caches within ten miles of SRL, and eight in our woods alone. To see a map of area geocaches visit www.geocaching.com
