Power Outages

Cabins

It is not a common occurrence for the cabins to lose power, however, because of our remote location, it can happen. If you should lose power at your cabin, call Guest Services by dialing 301-689-3200 to report the outage. The Guest Services representative will relay any information that may be available at that time. If you should lose power after hours, call Mike and Jan at 301-689-5798. They will be able to assist you further.

Because each cabin uses a well pump for water, your water will not work when the power is out. It is very important that you DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE YOUR WATER when the power is out. It will cause great damage to the system. You will find a large 5 gallon container of water in your recycling closet. This is used to help flush your toilet; it is not suitable for drinking. Simply remove the lid to the toilet and pour water into the tank. Please do not wait to fill the tank. Fill it immediately after you flush. It will then be ready for your next use. Please be respectful and do not use these supplies unless it is truly an emergency.

An emergency lantern is in your closet to use in the event of an outage. There is also a flashlight attached to the key to your accommodation. If the power is out for an extended period of time, you may find refuge at the Lodge. The main Lodge will be open normal hours, as we do have a generator. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance, please contact Guest Services at 301-689-3200.

Yurts

Yurts are connected to a generator and, in the event of a power outage, will continue to function normally.

Our Story

Savage River

The Savage River Lodge is named after the Savage River State Forest which is named after the Savage River. There are two versions of the story behind the name of the State Forest, but in both stories the name “Savage” comes from a man named John Savage who was a surveyor in one of the first teams to study this area.

In one version of the story, Savage’s team lost their way and started to run out of supplies. Eventually, all of their food was gone. John, seeing the others going hungry, felt he was a hindrance as the oldest of the group and offered himself to be eaten. Just when the surveyors were about to turn to this desperate measure, another survey team with fresh supplies arrived. It was decided that the river would be named after John Savage for his willingness to sacrifice himself for the others.

The second version goes that John Savage was selected by the group of surveyors to be the fare for the table because he was the oldest and most worthless member of the party. Again, luckily for John, the other survey group arrived with fresh supplies. The other men of the survey party felt so bad for getting ready to sacrifice a member of their party, they decided it would be fitting to name the river after the man they targeted for the knife.

Mike & Jan

However, there is more to our history than just our name! Mike and Jan’s story began not that long ago and begins with a meeting of fate. Some might say the same fate that kept John Savage safe. It brought two people together who believe that everyone needs time to enjoy nature.

Mike and Jan met in 1989 at a conference at the University of Chicago. They met on the last day on the last shuttle bus back to the hotel. From then on the two kept in touch, and their relationship grew long distance from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Hagerstown, Maryland. As their relationship grew so did their ideas. They created a management development program, Nature of Business, founded on what nature can teach us personally and organizationally. As they hunted the perfect venue for this philosophy, they found great scenic locations and great accommodations, but not one place that had both. Finally, the conversation began: “Why don’t we just build it ourselves?”

With that simple question began the building of a dream. Granted, it was not always a perfect process, but here you are, relaxing, dining, and enjoying yourself in the midst of two people’s dream who share a love for nature.

We hope you enjoy it!

Lodge Dogs - Bodhi, Kokopelli & Karma

Bodhi was born on March 8, 1995 and was named by Mike’s daughter, Arrity. After the Lodge opened in 1999, Bodhi took on the role of welcoming all guests, human and canine. He would greet guests just arriving on property, join them on hikes all over the property, attend business group meetings, and even sneak into guests’ photos. In a book produced by Maryland photographer, Middleton Evans, during the last few years of Bodhi's life, his exceptional charm and loyalty are illuminated through pictures and kind words from guests, fans and admirers whose paths crossed his. Bodhi's irresistible spirit fills other books; Bodhi & the Friendly Forest and Bodhi the Christmas Helper. His talent for modeling and making people smile are well renowned. Bodhi crossed the rainbow bridge on March 13, 2008.

Kokopelli and Karma were born January 30, 2010, they are brother and sister.

Lodge Facts

  • The cabins are made of white pine.

  • The Lodge is made of spruce and fir.

  • The conifers of the forest are mainly Red Spruce.

  • Bodhi was born on March 8, 1995. He lived a charmed life to the ripe old age of 13 years.

  • The Savage River Lodge private property is situated on 45 acres of land which is surrounded by about 750 acres of the Savage River State Forest.

  • It takes 30-50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.

  • Our average snow accumulation is 135 inches per year.

  • We cannot pave the road because firstly, part lies in the state forest, and secondly,

the part we could do would have to be done with a pervious material due to the surrounding state forest.

Making a Difference

Before “Green” was in, or the way to be, we were doing our part to preserve our world and the natural environment. The Savage River Lodge is based on nature and encouraging our guests to interact with the natural world in a responsible way. From the initial building to our continued operation, being green is our way of life. We believe that it is our responsibility to give back to our community and to be good stewards of this wonderful planet we live on.

Bridge to the Lodge: The bridge crossing the headwaters of the Savage River is a recycled military bridge destined to go to Bosnia that we purchased three years before it was installed. Prior to that and the construction of the road it took approximately 45 minutes to travel back to the Lodge!

Building the Lodge: The wood used for construction of the Lodge is mostly spruce and fir, a renewable resource. The building’s insulation is made from recycled rubber, and the rocks and stone used for paving and the walls are from the construction area. We use scrap logs and building materials for interior and exterior projects, including wood docks that were destined for the landfill repurposed as foot bridges on our trails.

Solar Panels: In April 2011, the Lodge installed 325 solar panels behind the main Lodge building. The panels provide 65 percent of the Lodge's electricity and create 84 Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECS) each year. With the addition of the solar panels, we were named the Maryland Department of Tourism’s Green/Sustainable business of 2011.

Tesla Electric Car Charging Station: The two connectors that are installed at the Savage River Lodge are operating on a 208/204 volts three phase or single phase line. The Tesla connector can provide a charge rate of 16 kW while the Universal connector will provide between 5-7 kW of charge.

Conservation & Recycling: Since we are located in a state forest and we are focused on nature and its wonders, we do all that we can to protect this natural arena. To this end, we ask that you join us in our conservation efforts. As you explore our wilderness please remember “Take Nothing, Leave Nothing” and “Leave Only Footprints.” Please do not collect plants, insects, animals, or any other natural items; we do not wish to damage the biosphere.

Our greatest conservation effort is to use as little electricity as possible. If you come to the lodge and see that the lights are off, know that we are open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Please feel free to turn on the lights. If you need help locating the switches, ask the Guest Services Representative for assistance. To go along with the Main Lodge’s attempt at conservation we ask that you turn off any unnecessary lighting when you leave your cabin and turn off all lights upon your departure.

The Recycling Bucket Program allows you to recycle from your cabin. Just place your recyclable items into the recycling bucket located in your closet. We will gather these recyclables and add them to our own collection for deposit at the local recycling center.

You will also find a biomass recycling system behind the Lodge. This boiler uses wood scraps that would otherwise be thrown into landfills as a way to heat the Lodge and water during the cold winter months.

All of the cabins, yurts and the Main Lodge are equipped with low flow toilets and faucets. These decrease wasteful use of one our most precious natural resources. Additionally, six of our 18 cabins and all 8 yurts are retrofitted with in-line hot water heaters, which heat the water as needed instead of storing it.

Bodhi Lodge Dog Foundation: In honor of our beloved Bodhi. Donations help with medical or cremation expenses for pets who aren't as fortunate as Bodhi was. To date we have raised over $9,000. If you wish to contribute, checks can be made payable to:

"Bodhi Lodge Dog Relief Fund"

1600 Mt. Aetna Road

Frostburg, MD 21532

We take comfort in knowing how much he was loved and how his memory will live on in the hearts of so many people whose lives he touched. We honor a life well-lived and loved.

Habitat for Humanity: Habitat for Humanity of Allegany County is one of our favorite organizations. "Building Simple Decent Houses for People in Need". We have raised over $42,000 to build Habitat homes in Western Maryland. The "Savage River Lodge" Habitat house was built in 2009.

Heifer International: Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Heifer does this by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide.

The Property

Main Lodge

The Lodge is built from spruce and fir logs, but sheer passion, unyielding vision, and deliberate consideration of every detail also went into its construction. Plans were drawn up with an architect from Oregon and an interior designer from Hagerstown, MD in 1998. By the following year, the property was opened to our first guests.

The Lodge is the central gathering point with a spacious 10,000 square feet and three floors of multi-use areas. It is home to the Guest Services office, restaurant, bar, Savage River Trading Company gift shop, library loft, and meeting room. In addition to wi-fi available in each guest accommodation, the main Lodge also offers complimentary wi-fi.

Guest Services Office: Guest Services is located in the main Lodge, to the left of the entry and is staffed from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. The Guest Services representatives will be able to help you with a multitude of arrangements. If you need to arrange an activity at the Lodge, find directions, or make dinner reservations, this is the place to call. The Guest Services Office can also assist with coffee and extra supplies, lost and found issues, and mail. Call 301-689-3200 or stop by the desk if you need assistance. Coffee, cold beverages, and a variety of snacks are also available in the Guest Services office. Stop by before your hike to grab a snack and a trail map!

Restaurant & Bar: The restaurant at the Savage River Lodge, Catalpa, is a wonderful place to enhance your experience with us through food. Our menu features a variety of gourmet American cuisine. We offer wild game, house-made pastas, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. While many dine with us for special occasions, the attire is casual. The restaurant is open for dinner seven days a week, and breakfast and lunch on weekends. Reservations are not needed for breakfast and lunch, but are essential for dinner.

Muffin baskets are delivered daily by 8:30 a.m. and include a muffin, orange juice, and a Bodhi biscuit for any pups. Weekdays we offer upgrade options for the muffin baskets that include fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, juices, etc. Our Cheers for Vacation upgrades, available every day of the week, offer the option to add mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, and other alcohol beverages to your basket.

If you have a busy day planned and aren’t able to dine with us for lunch, we do offer lunches to go! Whether a day out sightseeing, hiking the trails, or even just relaxing in your cabin all day, you will have your lunch packed and ready to go wherever your plans take you.

Our bar is open daily at 10:00 a.m. with the exception of Sunday. County laws allow alcohol sales only after 1:00 p.m. on Sundays. If you do not see a bartender at the bar, stop at Guest Services and we will be happy to assist you.

We offer a Bone Appetit menu for our four-legged! You can order your best friend a gourmet meal just about any time you’re at the Lodge. Your dog is sure to love it! You can find a copy with our other menus in this book, on our website, or can be obtained from Guest Services.

To upgrade your muffin basket, make special arrangements for lunch, reserve a table for dinner, or to get current restaurant hours, please call Guest Services at 301-689-3200 or stop by the office.

Savage River Trading Company Gift Shop: Our gift shop, The Savage River Trading Company, is located on the ground floor of the main Lodge and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. In the gift shop you’ll find mementos, souvenirs, Mike’s handmade turkey calls, locally made products, household décor, pet supplies, and games. Travel toiletries such as toothpaste, hair brushes, and shaving cream are also available in case you forgot something at home. You can take all of your Trading Company purchases to Guest Services, where you can cash out or charge the purchases to your cabin.

Great Room: The Great Room is located to the right once you enter the front doors into the Lodge. It is home to our piano and lots of comfy chairs/couches that surround our beautiful, double-sided, stone fireplace. Through the winter months, you’ll find a fire blazing in the fireplace through the day and into the evening. Grab a glass of wine from the nearby bar, find a seat around the fireplace, and strike up a conversation with our other guests. You never know who you might meet!

There is also a closet located to the right of the entrance of the main Lodge that has many games, puzzles, cards, and photo albums. Enjoy these items here or take them to your cabin, but please return them before you depart for other guests to enjoy.

Library Loft: The library loft is located on the second floor of the Lodge. Cozy and full of natural light, it’s the perfect place to hole up for a while. Thanks to our generous guests, our library is stocked with book donations. You will find an assortment of books that you are welcome to enjoy here or take them to your cabin, but please return them before you depart for other guests to enjoy.

Meeting Room: The meeting room is also located on the second floor of the Lodge. This room is a large, private space that oftentimes houses comfy chairs and couches and additional seating for the restaurant. This room is oftentimes used for dinner parties, wedding reception dinners, business meetings, celebrations, and other private functions. However when it is not being used for events, it is open for guests to enjoy. Like the loft, you will find an assortment of books which you are welcome to read. We just ask that they be returned before you depart so that other guests may enjoy them as well.

Decks: Our spacious decks are located around the right side of the Lodge and are easily accessible from inside via the double doors in the Great Room. Settle in to one of our rocking chairs for a while or dine at one of the outdoor tables – the beautiful view of the lower yard, light breeze, and peaceful sounds of the forest will have you relaxed in no time.

While the decks are great for relaxing, pets must lounge in the lower yard. Pets unfortunately are not allowed on the decks or in the main Lodge.

Bonfire Circle

Just off the East Porch is our bonfire circle, which is a great place to relax and exchange stories with other guests. Bonfires are held based on weather conditions and are lit and maintained by Lodge Staff only.

Hiking Trails

The Lodge is situated on 43 acres of private property, nestled in the middle of the Mt. Aetna Tract of the Savage River State Forest. Through a cooperative agreement with the State of Maryland, we maintains 14 miles of trails throughout our property and the Savage River State Forest. The diverse loop trails offer hours of enjoyment and opportunities to enjoy nature at its finest. See our trail map here, or stop by Guest Services for a paper copy. During hunting season (October - December) please pick up an orange vest from Guest Services to wear while you are hiking.

Yurts

Surrounded by the sounds of the forest, with nothing on your agenda but a glass of wine and maybe a hike – that’s what glamorous camping or “glamping” feels like at the Savage River Lodge Yurt Village! So, what is a yurt? A yurt is a nomadic structure traditionally used in the steppes of Mongolia, consisting of a round moveable tent with a bent-frame roof.

Our yurts are similarly styled and produced by Pacific Yurts. Since 1978, Pacific Yurts has pioneered yurt design and construction, reinventing the traditional form to have it down to a science while maintaining exceptional quality. Immediately after meeting with them at their headquarters in Cottage Grove, Oregon, Mike knew he had found a partner to provide another unique lodging category at SRL. While ours are similarly styled to their nomadic counterparts, they are permanent structures with a wood frame covered in lattice work surrounded by a thick canvas outer covering. Our yurts also include private bathrooms, king-size beds, gas-log fireplaces and radiant floor heat from Warmboard, making them a cozy retreat year round.

Blending the tradition and nostalgia of tent camping with the luxuries that our cabins are known for, the yurts are the best of both worlds and provide a truly one-of-a-kind “glamping” experience!

Yurt Facts:

  • The yurts arrived at the Lodge (in pieces) on Mike’s birthday, August 1, 2013.

  • All eight units were constructed by hand by Mike and his crew who worked tirelessly for months to have them ready for guests by the following summer.

  • May of 2014 we welcomed our first guests staying in the yurts.

  • The yurts are 30 feet in diameter.

  • The frame structure is built from Douglas Fir that was grown in sustainably managed forests.

  • Although it looks like thin canvas, the yurts are tough! They are covered in three layers: an outer shell of weatherproof canvas, a layer of gel insulation and an inner canvas layer.

  • Ours are the only yurts in this area with fully plumbed bathrooms.

  • They are sustainable structures, all equipped with eco-friendly in-line water heaters.

  • Radiant floor heat, controlled by thermostat, allows them to stay warm even through cold Garrett County winters.

  • Ceiling fans provide a cooling breeze, and open windows and doors allow for ample cross-ventilation.

  • Yurts are connected to a generator and, in the event of power outages, will continue to function normally

  • Although pets are very welcome in our cabins, yurts do not accommodate pets.

  • The bathroom vanities are built out of the pallets that the yurts were originally shipped in.

Cabins

More than the Lodge, the cabins are what put us on the map. All eighteen "mini" lodges were built here, handcrafted from white pine, meticulously stained and lovingly constructed. These sturdy structures harken back to first generation home building by settlers. Interlocking timbers and authentic chinking inspire quiet introspection and thoughtfulness of our relationship with the surroundings, and of those who tread these paths long before us.

Our private cabins are a step beyond what one imagines upon hearing the word. The two-story log cabins provide exceptional comfort and amenities. On the main floor you will find a seating area that is furnished with sink-into chairs, a queen sleeper-sofa, table and chairs, a gas-log fireplace, gourmet hot beverage supplies, and a small refrigerator. The generous bath, also located on the main floor, offers two sinks, a soaking tub, and upscale amenities. The main sleeping loft is home to a down-clad queen or king bed, good reading light and ample solitude. Your rocking-chair-furnished porch provides a wonderful retreat to enjoy the surrounding nature.

While all 18 cabins are generally the same on the inside, we actually consider there to be five types of cabins based on their location along the cabin lane:

Premier Cabins: Our Premier cabins are cabins 1, 10, and 11. They are considered as such because they are set farther back from the other cabins, providing additional privacy. They have a queen bed in the sleeping loft with a queen sleeper sofa in the living area. Some units are pet-friendly and can accommodate additional guests.

Forest View Cabins: As the name implies, these cabins have unobstructed views of the forest from the covered porch, and includes cabins 12 through 18. They are outfitted with a queen bed in the sleeping loft and a queen sleeper sofa in the living area. Many of them are pet-friendly and can accommodate additional guests.

Standard King Cabins: Unlike all of the other cabins, these cabins have king beds in the sleeping loft. Some have a queen sleeper sofa in the living area that can accommodate additional people, and a couple of the cabins allow pets. Our Standard King cabins include 3, 6 and 9.

Standard Queen Cabins: Including cabins 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8, the Standard Queen cabins have a queen bed in sleeping loft and some have a queen sleeper sofa in living area. While still outfitted with the same luxury amenities as the other cabins, their covered porches face toward the cabin lane. A few of these cabins are pet friendly.

Cabin Facts:

  • We welcomed our first cabin guests in October 1999.

  • The cabins are built primarily of white pine.

  • Cabins use a well pump for water.

  • Some have been named in honor of beloved pets that frequently stayed in those cabins. Read their stories below!

Named Cabins

Bogg Dog’s Den, Cabin 14

The beginning…

Bogguss was born on November 13, 1997. The year was easy to remember because it was the same year I graduated from law school.  I did not make his acquaintance until February, 1999, at a PetSmart at Potomac Mills, Virginia. It was a dog adoption day and I knew the moment I laid my eyes on him that he was the right dog. I had spent months looking at all the animal shelters in the D.C. metro area and had not found the right dog, but there he was – a Chihuahua beagle mix, he looked like a giant version of the Taco Bell Chihuahua. When the mix-breed “puggle” became popular, I jokingly said Bogguss was a “chuggle,” or perhaps a “behuahua.”

When I first adopted him, his name was Milo. I had read that you should change the name of an adopted dog so they end all association with their prior life. I also thought it was a good idea since Milo couldn’t seem to distinguish between his name and “no.” Or at least that’s what I thought – it turns out he was really just stubborn. I was struggling with what to name him, when my mom suggested the name “Bogguss,” after Suzy Bogguss, a country music singer who was popular in the ‘90s, a huge dog rescue advocate, and a friend of mine. So Bogguss it was – the one-dog marketing machine for Suzy Bogguss.

Bogguss got his nickname when I decided to get a personalized, animal friendly license plate in Virginia. Since they only allowed 6 characters (and Bogguss is 7), I had to do something to shorten his name. Since his name was always mispronounced (no, he’s not “bogus”) and Suzy’s last name is always misspelled, I was not going to remove any of the letters. And hence, “BogDog” was born. “Den” is also my nickname from childhood and thus Bogguss and I will be together forever through Cabin 14, Bog Dog’s Den.

Bogguss was a character, to say the least.  He was entirely too smart for his own good – breaking out of 2 different types of dog crates (once without any hint of how) and forcing me to buy an airplane crate big enough for a German Shepard. Eventually, I gave in and let him have the run of the house- he usually got his way anyhow.

A love affair, Bogguss and the Savage River Lodge…

Bogguss first came to Savage River Lodge in April of 2002. I was putting my townhouse in Arlington on the market and in those heady days of a real-estate market out of control, I needed to be out of the house all weekend for the flood of house hunters that would come through once it was listed. We had heard about SRL from other dog friends of ours in the area, but we had no idea how much a part of our lives it would eventually become.

After that first visit, we did not come again for another 18 months, but then became a regular, escaping the D.C. rat-race for long weekends. SRL was Bogguss’ favorite place on earth. When we got off the interstate at the Finzel exit, I would put the windows down and Bogguss would stick his head out the window, knowing in a single sniff where we were and what he could look forward to! The whole way up the Lodge road, he would jump excitedly back and forth between the front seat and back seat, barking cheerfully at deer if we passed them on the road. He would bark as soon as we pulled into the parking area, announcing our arrival to everyone. After a quick trip to the bathroom, he would go back in the car and bark continuously until I had checked in, filled up my growler of beer, and returned.

I’ll never forget the time Bodhi came trotting out to the side of the car, tilted his head, and gave a quick “woof,” as though to say “chill, Bog Dog, you’re here.” Bogguss loved everything about the Lodge. I lost him more than a few times in the woods while hiking when he would catch the scent of deer and his beagle instincts would kick in. I’d call his name with no luck, until crying out the fear-inspiring “okay, Bogguss, I’m leaving!” at which point he would appear, without fail, at the top of the nearest rise, a look of utter panic on his face.

Bogguss’ separation anxiety was infamous. He would bark for a solid 5 minutes after I left him in the cabin for lunch or dinner, which is pretty much why this is the only place we could ever visit – we were at least far enough away from the next cabin to not be too annoying when he carried on - particularly at 8 a.m. when the basket would arrive. More than anything else, Bogguss loved the basket and the moment he heard the golf cart, car, mule, or whatever conveyance was bringing the baskets, the barking was on. High-pitched excitement filled his voice and I was forced to get up, put on my robe, and get him to the front door as soon as possible. I can’t count how many times I had to open the front door to convince him the basket wasn’t there yet. It became a game (at least with Mike) to see if he could get the basket to the front door without waking up Bogguss. I think he succeeded once.

We moved in 2005 to Knoxville, TN, 500 miles from our beloved Lodge. We made fewer trips after then, coming twice each year for a week at a time to come see our Maryland family. The family figures Bogguss spent about 4 months of his life here.

Even as Bogguss got older, and slower, dealing with Cushing’s Syndrome, diabetes, and losing some of his hearing (or maybe that was just him being stubborn), he was a puppy again when we came to the Lodge. He could hike for hours. He loved the Green Bodhi Trail and the Red Oak Trail. We once hiked the entire Red Trail, including a portion where half the path had fallen into the river, and Bogguss just climbed around it like a mountain goat. Bogguss was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer in March 2011. After rounds of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and visits to the ICU, all I wanted was to bring him back for one more visit to the Lodge. We planned on coming July 4 week.  Fifty miles outside of Knoxville, I realized he was too sick.

He passed away July 15, 2011, finally succumbing to the pain of a cancer he fought valiantly for so many months with the temperament of a saint. Some of his ashes are spread on the Green Bodhi Trail so can forever spend time at his favorite place on earth.

In-room dining delivery times for dinner service are limited and subject to a $10 fee. Gratuity added at your discretion.

Fans & Cooling: In the cabins, you will find two ceiling fans. Use them to distribute heat in the winter and to cool during the summer. A box fan is located in your closet. To keep your accommodation cool during the summer, place the box fan in the window at night at the bottom of the stairs blowing in and open all your windows. This will draw in the cool night air. If you close your windows in the morning the cool air will remain in the cabin. With the shade provided from the trees your cabin will stay comfortable all day.

Yurts tend to get much warmer inside during the summer months as they are not shaded by trees. In addition to turning on the ceiling fan, we encourage you to leave the windows and door open — open the side deck door and place the fan in front to circulate air throughout the yurt. Upon departing, you may close all windows.

Fireplace & Heating: In cabins, the gas fireplace operates by the thermostat located on the wall. Set it to a comfortable temperature as you would at home and it will do the rest, automatically turning the flames on and off as needed to keep your temperature setting. There are other controls on the fireplace unit itself. Please DO NOT adjust these controls as it may cause your fireplace to malfunction. Please turn your thermostat to 60 degrees when you depart to help conserve energy. You will also find electric baseboard heaters in the cabins for use during extremely cold weather. Baseboard heaters are located in the bathroom, living area and loft. The controls for the baseboard heat are located on the heaters themselves. The living area control is right inside the front door. The ceiling fan is very helpful and should be on to properly circulate the heat.

In the yurts, the Warmboard radiant floor heat is controlled by the thermostat. We recommend keeping it between 65 and 70 degrees in cold weather. The fireplace in the yurts need to be manually turned on for use. There is an on/off switch on the back, top, right hand corner of the fireplace. Do not attempt to disassemble the stove as damage may occur. Ceiling fans should be turned on to help circulate the heat throughout the yurt.

The fireplaces in both the yurts and the cabins generate a great deal of heat. Please do not place any items on the fireplace, making sure to keep all items at least 2 feet from the fireplace surfaces. Placing items in direct contact with the fireplace may result in damage or cause a fire. This includes the chairs, ottoman, blankets, and other furniture located in the cabin. Damages caused by placing items in contact with the fireplace will result in charges for the repair or replacement of the damaged item(s).

There may be times when appliances, fireplaces, electronics, etc. malfunction. We strive to service and restore these amenities as quickly as possible, but we are unable to provide any refunds for time without these items. Please notify us immediately of any malfunctions.

Please note that use of the gas log fireplace is seasonal. In an effort to conserve resources and maintain a comfortable summer temperature the fireplace is only in service from mid-September through mid-May. Seasonal temperatures can affect this time span. The cabin baseboard heating system is functional year-round.

Policies & Procedures

Check In & Check Out

Check-in begins at 4:00 pm. If you have arrived after Guest Services has closed please remember to stop at Guest Services located in the main Lodge in the morning to register.

Standard check-out time is 11:00 am. Please stop at Guest Services on your way out to settle your account. If you will be departing before Guest Services opens you may settle your account the night before or call 301-689-3200 when you are departing to leave a message and we will charge your account to the credit card on file.

Parking

Parking is provided at accommodation for one vehicle. Because of the small size of the area we do ask that you keep only one vehicle at your cabin. Any additional vehicles may be parked in the lower overflow parking lot. We ask that while you are at your cabin that you park only in your designated space. Service or cart paths are not made for standard vehicle travel; please do not drive on them, doing so may damage buried underground utilities.  If you have a disability or special needs please contact the Guest Services and we will be happy to assist you.

During your stay, we ask that you walk to and from the Lodge rather than drive. Our parking is limited and the main lot is also used by our non-lodging dinner guests.

Smoking

The Lodge is a non-smoking facility. Smoking cigarettes or e-cigarettes is not permitted at any of the Lodge facilities including the cabins, yurts, and the porches of the Lodge. Stray cigarette butts thrown into the forest pose a great risk of starting a fire in this environment. If you would like to smoke outside your accommodation, an ashcan can be provided for your use. It is not only a good safety practice, it also maintains the appearance of the Lodge property. Please keep in mind that smoking on the deck of the accommodations is likely to allow smoke to enter through the door or windows and a cleaning fee will be charged to the credit card on file.

There is a designated smoking area at the Lodge. It is at the front of the Lodge near the handicap ramp, and there is a cigarette disposal unit for cigarette butts. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Pets

We want our four-legged friends to have just as good of a stay as our people friends! In order provide everyone the best experience possible, we ask the following:

  • Pets are permitted in your individual cabin, along pathways while on a leash, and on hiking trails in the State Forest.

  • Pets are not permitted in the Yurts.

  • Pets are not permitted in the main Lodge building or on the surrounding decks.

  • There are pet stations with disposal bags around the Lodge grounds. You can find them outside of Cabin 5 and Cabin 13, in front of the main Lodge and near the bonfire pit. When finished simply tie the bag and place it in the disposal bin at the bottom of the station. Remember pet clean-up is not only kind to others but required at the Lodge.

  • We know that many pets are welcomed on the furniture at home. As it is not permitted here, please use the pet sheets provided in the hall closet if you cannot keep your pet off of the furniture. There will be a $50 fee incurred if we spend excess time cleaning the cabins.

  • If your pet gets dirty, we do have a dog washing station around the back side of the main Lodge, which is open from April to November. There is a cabinet in which you can find clean towels on the top shelf. Please place the used towels in the bin at the bottom of the cabinet. Don’t forget to turn off the water! Brown pet towels are also in your hall closet. Please do not use our white people towels for pet clean up. If you need additional brown towels, we would be happy to provide them.

  • In the summer, screen doors are provided for your comfort. Damaged screen doors will be replaced at your expense. The total cost for materials and labor ($75) will be charged to the credit card on file. If you suspect your dog will jump at the screen door, keep the solid wood door closed.

  • To avoid damage and excessive noise problems, please do not leave your pet unattended in the cabin for extended periods of time. Guests are here to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.  If complaints are made about excessive barking by your dog, we will be happy to recommend a local kennel for the remainder of your stay.

  • All visiting pets should be current on all veterinary-recommended vaccinations and preventative flea/tick treatments.

Fire Safety & Prevention

Due to the unique structures and surroundings at the Savage River Lodge there are some unique concerns that face the property. The most obvious is fire. With most of the structures on property made from wood and all of them surrounded by a densely wooded forest, it is easy to see why fire is a preeminent concern. Here is some helpful information and a few guidelines to follow that will ensure your safety, the safety of others, and the safety of the surrounding forest.

Grilling: Outdoor grilling is not permitted on the Lodge property or in the State Forest.

Outdoor Fires: Outdoor fires of any kind are not permitted on the Lodge property or in the State Forest. Controlled bonfires are occasionally scheduled on the Lodge property dependent upon weather conditions and risk of fire. As all bonfires are to be started and maintained by Lodge staff, they will only be held when staffing is available to maintain the fire. Bonfires will be put out by 10:00 p.m.

Smoking: Stray cigarette butts thrown into the forest pose a great risk of starting a fire in this environment. If you do smoke, please dispose of the butts in an ash can available from Guest Services. It is not only a good safety practice, but it also maintains the appearance of the Lodge property. All cabins and yurts are non-smoking, including e-cigarettes. There is a designated smoking area at the main Lodge.

Candles: Candles are not permitted in the cabins or yurts. A candle is a great fire risk to the property and the safety of our guests.

Fireplace: The fireplace generates a great deal of heat. For this reason do not place any items on the fireplace. Keep all items at least 2 feet from fireplace surfaces. Do not place any items in direct contact with the fireplace as they may be damaged or ignite and cause a fire.

Fire Extinguisher: A fire extinguisher is located in each yurt under the sink and in each cabin’s closet. If a fire should begin this may help in the control or extinguishing of the fire. If you are able to control or extinguish the fire please evacuate and call 911 immediately. After contacting 911, please contact Guest Services or Mike and Jan immediately. We will contact the other guests around your cabin. After you have evacuated the cabin, please come to the Main Lodge and await further instruction.

Safety & Security: Since we are located within a large wooded area please be aware that terrain, weather, and wildlife are all variable during your stay. Please be cautious in unfamiliar areas as injuries may occur, especially during bad weather.

Please be cautious during rain or snow fall as many surfaces will become extremely slippery. Please be particularly careful of the steps to your yurt/cabin as the wood can be slippery. Please use your hand rail. We are not able to use salt on the wooden porches. A snow shovel is provided on the porch of each accommodation for your use. Please be careful when shoveling snow. If you would like assistance clearing snow, please contact Guest Services at 301-689-3200.

Accommodations should be locked when unoccupied to keep your belongings safe and secure in your absence.

Winter Sports

The 14 miles of hiking trails around the Lodge become 14 miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails when the snow flies. The trails vary from easy to more difficult. Bodhi’s Green trail is a relaxing and low impact trail, while the Red Outer trail is more challenging. Additional copies of the trail map are available from Guest Services. Availability and grooming of the trails are dependent on the snowfall and temperature.

The ski shop, located just below the main Lodge, is where we offer cross country skiing lessons and rental equipment for both skiing and snowshoeing. If you have any questions about rates or availability please contact Guest Services.

Wine/beer Cache

Geocaching is one of the latest and greatest forms of recreation to emerge from the information technology age. Think of it as a treasure hunt with some modern day enhancements. Similar to the 150 year old letterboxing, which uses references to landmarks and clues embedded in stories, geocaching was made possible by the removal of Selective Availability from Global Positioning System (GPS) on May 1, 2000. The first documented placement of a GPS-located cache took place on May 3, 2000 by Dave Ulmer in Beavercreek, Oregon. The location was posted on a Usenet newsgroup. By May 6, 2000, it had been found twice and logged once by Mike Teague of Vancouver, Washington.

The Wine and Beer Cache course at the Savage River Lodge is the perfect introduction to this unique and entertaining pastime. Use our course to have a little fun and see if you will catch the geocaching fever. Your objective is to locate the 4 caches hidden on the Lodge property. At a cost of $35.00 we will supply you with a GPS unit loaded with the proper coordinates, a trail map, some easy to learn instruction, and a basic introduction to geocaching. As you find each cache collect a cork or bottle cap from the container. Turn your corks/caps in to Guest Services for your choice of a glass of house wine or beer from our bar.

Fly Fishing

Almost all of Maryland’s trophy trout come from Western Maryland waters. That is one of the many great reasons to try out fly fishing here at the Savage River Lodge. Whether you have been fishing for years or want to try it out for the first time, our recommended guided fly fishing trips are just right. For the avid fisherman, our guide will take you to some of the best fly fishing waters in Maryland. If you are a beginner, sign up for our Intro to Fly Fishing course to learn how to cast, read the river, and basics of fly selection.

Fly fishing season generally runs from April to October. There are four streams within 15 to 45 minutes of the Lodge: Savage River, Casselman River, Youghiogheny River, and the North Branch of the Potomac River. Remember that whether you fish with one of our guides or by yourself you will still need a Maryland Fishing License with a trout stamp. You can purchase a fishing license on line at www.dnr.state.md.us.

If you would like to schedule our recommended fishing guide, Tony Lolli, contact guest services and we will get you in contact with him. 301.689.3200

Biking

The Savage River Lodge is located just a few miles from the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Bike Trail. The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile system of biking and hiking trails connecting Cumberland, MD and Pittsburgh, PA. The connection to the C&O Canal Towpath in Cumberland, MD provides a continuous non-motorized corridor, 316 miles long, from Pittsburgh to Washington, DC. The trail has a packed crushed limestone surface for a smooth ride.  Built mainly on abandoned railroads, the trail grade, with a few very short exceptions, never exceeds 1.75% westbound and .8% eastbound. You have the option to rent Lodge equipment if needed or we will transport your equipment.

Our GAP Trek is a gentle 16 mile trip that starts in Meyersdale, PA and takes you over the Eastern Continental Divide and through the Big Savage Tunnel to Frostburg, MD (almost all downhill!) Extending the Trek to Cumberland will give you a 32 mile trip.

If you really want to get your blood flowing, try our Half GAP Package. We have designed this package to encompass 75 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage from Ohiopyle, PA to Cumberland, MD.

Local Attractions

Carey Run Bird Sanctuary, 15 min

The property is essentially the valley of two small streams, Carey Run and Hefner Run. Because of this, it has relatively rugged topography.  Most of the original 52 acres and some of the additional acreage are fields. Some are mowed to stay as fields, while others have been planted in trees and shrubs attractive to wildlife. The elevation is 2400-2600 feet, imparting a northern influence on the biota.  The sanctuary is closed during the winter months from the second weekend in October to the last weekend in April.

Casselman River Bridge State Park, 30 minutes

Casselman River Bridge State Park is a 4-acre parcel, popular for picnicking, fly fishing and photography. When the 80-foot span was erected in 1813, it was the longest single-span stone arch bridge in the United States and served as an important link on the National Road from 1813 to 1933.  Although the bridge no longer carries vehicular traffic, it is open to pedestrians and is accessible for disabled visitors.

Deep Creek Lake State Park, 45 minutes

95% of this park consists of forests regenerated from the original stands of timber. The Deep Creek Discovery Center is a great place to learn about the natural environment. Pets permitted on the trail on a leash.

Deep Creek Lavender Farm, 45 minutes

A Maryland farm celebrating all that lavender has to offer! Open seasonally Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Fallingwater & Kentuck Knob, 60 min

One of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most acclaimed works, Fallingwater was designed in 1935 for the family of a Pittsburgh Department store, the Kauffmans. While visiting this national landmark, checkout Frank Lloyd Wright’s lesser-known property, Kentuck Kob, just a few miles away from Fallingwater.  Advance reservations recommended. See Guest Services for information about our Art & Nature Package!

Finzel Swamp (The Nature Conservancy), 15 min

A reminder of life from 15,000 years ago, the Finzel Swamp is a window into ice ages past. The swamp is located in a “frost pocket”, an area where the surrounding hills capture moisture and cold air that conspire to create a landscape more reminiscent of habitat found much further north in Canada. Pets are not permitted on the preserve.

Flight 93 Memorial, 60 min

On September 11, 2001, a Boeing 757 bound for San Francisco, better known as Flight 93, crashed in the fields of Western Pennsylvania after being taken over by terrorists. The brave men and women aboard that flight diverted it from its intended destination, the White House. A memorial just outside Shanksville, in the field where they crashed, has been constructed in their honor.

Ohiopyle State Park, 1 hour

Located on the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands.

Swallow Falls State Park, 50 minutes

Swallow Falls contains some of the most breathtaking scenery in Western Maryland. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53 foot waterfall, a spectacular sight. Pets are permitted during off season on a leash.

Most brides have their wedding venue picked well in advance, but have you thought about the rest of it? The bridal shower, bachelorette party and even getting ready on your big day? We can help your ideas come to life. From a plated dinner or buffet-style, to just dessert and coffee or a Champagne brunch, our celebrations coordinators will work with you to plan the perfect shower. If you're looking for something more low-key for your bachelorette party, consider us as well. We can provide luxury accommodations, a fabulous meal for you and your closest girlfriends and keep the bubbly flowing all night. Our Library Room is the perfect facility for the rehearsal dinner. Once again, we'll work with you to plan your perfect meal. You can party as long as you like, then head up to the cabins for a restful night of sleep. The next day, have your hair and make-up team come to us, we can bring a light brunch up to your cabin while you get ready.  We’ll send your wedding party on your way to the main event. Afterwards, spend your first newly wedded night with us, before jet-setting off to your honeymoon.

And we can't forget the groom! What's more relaxing than a day spent fly fishing with one of our guides and your groomsmen, or on a boat on Deep Creek lake with a few coolers of beer (and our own Mike as your driver) for the groom-to-be's bachelor party? After a day spent on the water, come back to our gourmet restaurant for a great meal, more libations and a night in our luxury accommodations.

We can tailor the menu to your needs - craving BBQ, breakfast foods or a table of sweets? Let us know! Dessert and coffee, Champagne brunch with nonalcoholic Ariel Champagne for mom and baby, a gender reveal party or even co-ed options are just a few of the things that we can do. We'd love to help you celebrate your upcoming addition and take all of the stress away of planning the perfect party. Also don't forget to book that Babymoon package!

Birthday, Anniversary & Retirement Parties: So many great milestones deserve a great event. Our Library Room can comfortably hold 36 people seated, or more at a less formal function. Whether the birthday guest is vegetarian, gluten free or loves chicken Alfredo, we can work together and come up a memorable menu. If you're looking for something more festive, we can orchestrate a cocktail party with waiter passed hors d'oeuvres, a signature cocktail or punch and a cake cutting.
